What is “Dissidia: Final Fantasy” about?

We Square-Enix fans have gotten little tastes here and there of our favorite characters giving each other a good wallop for no apparent reason in games like Ehrgeiz and the “Paracelsus’ Table” mini-game within Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. But now Square-Enix is set to release the “Dramatic Progressive Action” fighter, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, for the PSP on December 18th in Japan. It will feature a pair of characters, one hero and one villain, from several different Final Fantasy games. You can find the current info on what characters will be in it, as well as watch a promo movie (Sephiroth fighting Squall *fangirl squeal!*), on the official Japanese site for the game found here (Don’t worry, the navigation is in English…and roman numerals.)

What I can’t really find in English though, is more details about the game’s story, since SE felt the need to give the game an actual storyline. (Haven’t they played Tekken? Who needs a consistent storyline in a fighting game? ^ . ^) Luckily for me, I can read a wee bit of Japanese. After plopping down with my dictionary though, the blurb you get on the site’s “Story” page isn’t terribly informative. But since I did the work, I’ll go ahead and post my translation of it here, with the original Japanese (for study purposes, or to correct me, or to see kanji that are hard make out on the site) below that. My Japanese is rusty, however. I can only vouch for the nouns! Here goes:

From the ultimate fantasy that eternally advances in the telling

This is a “heresy” that will be told just once–

Continuing their everlasting, unending war are the God of Harmony Cosmos and the God of Disorder Chaos.

These two opposites were equal,

and, above all, they were everything.

But the rash actions of the Destroyers have pulled down the balance, and the world is completely veiled in disarray.

The tiny hope left in the world is in the 10 warriors guided by Cosmos.

They are the tale of the world’s only chance.

There will be no being restricted by fantasy.

UPDATE–MAY 8, 2009

So, the English version of the Dissidia site is up, so now I can see how close my translation was!  For my own study benefit, I will compare them paragraph by paragraph here.  My translation is in italics, the official English version is in bold.

From the ultimate fantasy that eternally advances in the telling

The fantasy knows no end.

This is a “heresy” that will be told just once–

Of the endless fantasies, this is a “Heresy” that is only told once.

Continuing their everlasting, unending war are the God of Harmony Cosmos and the God of Disorder Chaos.  These two opposites were equal, and, above all, they were everything.

An endless battle continues between Cosmos, goddess of harmony, and Chaos, the god of discord.  Both are symbols.  Both form an equilibrium.  Above all, both are the universe.

But the rash actions of the Destroyers have pulled down the balance, and the world is completely veiled in disarray. The tiny hope left in the world is in the 10 warriors guided by Cosmos. They are the tale of the world’s only chance. There will be no being restricted by fantasy

But when the destroyers broke their balance, the world was consumed by Chaos.  The only hope left for the world is the 10 warriors summoned by Cosmos.  This is the story of possibilities.  And the world they created.  The fantasy is never set in form.
